How to Get More Followers on Instagram?

How to Get More Followers on Instagram?

… Is a question I am increasingly asked by students in our Digital Marketing courses and by clients at our Digital Agency.  There appears to be an increasingly insatiable appetite for fame and Dale Carnegie touched on this almost 100-years ago in his timeless book ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’.  By definition; most people cannot become ‘famous’ yet this fact only serves to make the aspiration more alluring.

In our modern celebrity obsessed world we have created new tools for chasing down the ‘affirmation buzz’ that we are (mostly secretly) seeking - Social Media.  The undisputed current champion is Instagram; it makes it easy for almost anyone to quickly obtain a large reach and engagement (relative to other channels).

But once you start, it’s difficult to stop, whether you have 1, 10, 100 or 1000 followers, you’ll always want more.  So, let’s explore how we do it …

First ask why?

Whilst Training on Social Media Marketing; I urge students to be clear on their mission and objectives when using Social Media - whether it’s your personal profile, your business profile or promoting some other product or entity, it’s much better to be aiming for reach and engagement that will supply some material gain.  This could be building your personal brand, targeted brand awareness for businesses or increasing your influence within a particular niche.

However, I am keenly aware that this article is about getting more Instagram Followers, so let’s leave the boring bits and get on with the job.

How shall we do this?

In truth, there are a large number of inter-connecting tactics, tools and strategies we can employ to help us achieve our aim of gaining followers on Instagram.  So, let’s set the boundaries before we start:

  1. We will assume that we are aiming to achieve our goal ‘organically’ and with any paid digital advertising, i.e. we want to get free followers on Instagram.
  2. We will assume that you have a defined brand strategy and marketing strategy, i.e. you know who you want to reach, what you want to say to and what you want to happen as a result.
  3. My extensive experience of teaching has taught me that people most often learn best, whilst doing, for this reason I will turn our approach into an entirely practical process where you can ‘do as you learn’.
  4. I will create a Facebook Group that will demonstrate the practical methods of growing your Instagram account to accompany this article. It will use a new feature of Facebook Groups to create practical ‘Instagram Growth Learning Units’ that will enable you to perform the tasks and understand them as you go.

Instagram Engagement Groups

Engagement pods are groups of people who typically connect around a certain niche and agree to follow each other and engage with each others content.  Many of these groups can be found on Facebook covering topics such as travel, beauty, fashion and more.

It is not a tactic that will work for sales and it is certainly not a tactic that (by itself) will lead to sales or you achieving your tangible objectives.  It should be seen and used as a way of ‘boosting’ short term reach and followers.

Visit the Facebook Group I have setup to accompany this article to experiment with how Facebook engagement groups work.  Once you have done this, explore the Facebook Engagement groups available for your niche.
